What should I do if I suspect my identity has been stolen?

We urge you to take these steps immediately:

Contact the three major credit reporting agencies. Ask them to place a fraud alert on your file to prevent credit products from being opened in your name without your authorization.

Equifax: (800) 525-6285

Experian: (888) 397-3742

TransUnion: (800) 680-7289

File a report with your local police. Even if the police can't catch the identity thief, having a police report can help you clear up your credit records later on.

Report the identity theft through the Federal Trade Commission’s website, www.IdentityTheft.gov & get a recovery plan. This resource provides an interactive checklist that will walk you through the recovery process & which recovery steps should be taken. It also provides sample letters & other helpful resources.&; In addition, the site offers specialized tips for specific forms of identity theft, including tax-related identity theft.
